The NWSL has awarded Western New York forward Lynn Williams, 23, the 2016 NWSL Golden Boot Award, the league announced on Monday. The Golden Boot award is given to the player who scored the most goals throughout the regular season, but for the first time in NWSL history there was a tie for that score.
Williams has scored 11 goals for the Flash and holds the lead with Kealia Ohai of the Houston Dash. But, Williams took the award for having more assists. She had five to Ohai’s four. The competition was close.
When it comes to Williams, there is no such thing “sophomore slump”. Williams was drafted from Pepperdine University as the No.6 overall pick in 2015. Last year she scored four goals for the Flash. But this season, Williams’s goals accounted for more than 25% of the goals the Flash had scored all season. The team scored 40 goals in 20 games. Six of William’s goals were against the Boston Breakers.
The WNY Flash enter the playoffs against Portland Thorns FC on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 5 p.m. ET
