New York’s Tina Charles scored a career-high 36 points against the Dallas Wings on Friday night to lead the Liberty to a 93-89 win.
In addition to Charles’ big night, New York’s Shavonte Zellous also added 27 points.
“I came out with a mentality that we were without two key players and I had to step up offensively,” Charles said. “I think we’re at our best when everyone’s involved when everyone’s flowing. Everyone can leave the arena feeling good about themselves.”
New York’s Kiah Stokes also added 13 points and had a career-best 15 rebounds.
New York also played without Epiphanny Prince and Kia Vaughn, who are both playing in the EuroBasket tournament this month.
Zellous hit a 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter to give New York an eight-point lead. Dallas, however, refused to go away easily, as the Wings cut the Liberty’s lead to 87-84 with a minute remaining. But Zellous hit two free throws to extend New York’s lead to five points, and then Kaela Davis converted a three-pointer.

Charles and Sugar Rodgers then hit four free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the win for New York.
“We left a lot of things on the boards, rebounding we gave them a lot of second opportunities,” Dallas coach Fred Williams said. “When it came down to it, it came down to rebounding and boxing out.”
Dallas’ Skylar Diggins scored 19 points while Theresa Plaisance added 18.
New York will host Phoenix on Sunday, while the Wings travel to face Indiana on Saturday night.
