Without Alex Morgan, Lyon edges Paris Saint-Germain to win French Cup

Alex Morgan was benched on Friday when her premier French soccer team, Olympique Lyonnais (OL) faced Paris Saint-Germain in the French Cup final. Without the U.S. soccer star striker, OL persevered and were able to win the French Cup in a penalty-shoot out.

This is OL’s sixth French Cup victory.

The game opened up in the seventh minute when PSG’s Cristiane scored to put her side up 1-0. In the 33rd minute, Saki Kumagai responded for Lyon and tied the game up 1-1. After an even scoreline at the end of regulation, the game went into a shootout.

In the eighth round of penalties, Ada Hegerberg scored to put Lyon on top and win the shootout 7-6.

The Paris rivals will face off again soon on June 1 when they play in Cardiff in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final. Lyon, hopefully with a healthy Morgan, will be after its fourth European title.

OL’s medical team said in a press release earlier this week that they are hopeful Morgan will return to the pitch for the Champions League final next month.
