LPGA cancels tournament in Shanghai due to permitting problems

The LPGA Tour has cancelled its October tournament in Shanghai after the Chinese government failed to approve the event, the LPGA announced on Tuesday. The Alisports LPGA tournament was scheduled to take place in Shanghai from October 5-8.

“Unfortunately, we have just received word that the tournament was unsuccessful in obtaining approval from the local district government,” LPGA Tour Commissioner Mike Whan said. “The hardest part about this news is that we have a title sponsor, a tournament operator, a TV production group and a host venue all set to go.”

However, this isn’t the first time that an LPGA tournament in China has been cancelled. The Reignwood Pine Valley LPGA Classic in Beijing was cancelled 10 weeks before it was scheduled to be played in 2015.

This weekend, the final major of the LPGA season takes place when The Evian Championship gets underway in France.
