Helen Maroulis captured the world title in the 58-kilogram weight class on Wednesday after mercy ruling all five of her opponents by a combined score of 53-0.
Last summer, Maroulis became the first American woman to win an Olympic wrestling title in Rio de Janeiro. Maroulis, who took seven months off after Rio, has now won two straight world titles.
“This was really special to me because I didn’t just go to Rio, do things right there and then come back and everything crashed and burned,” said Maroulis, who moved up two divisions this year. “Three years in a row, I achieved the goal I set.”
Since taking the bronze medal at the 2014 World Championships, Maroulis is now 78-1 over the last three years. She is the only American male or female wrestler to win an Olympic or world title without surrendering a point in 30 years.
