Evgenia Medvedeva wins 25th Ondrej Nepela Trophy

Evgenia Medvedeva dominated Saturday’s free skating event to win the 25th Ondrej Nepela Trophy ahead of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. The 17-year-old Russian finished with a total segment score of 146.72, well ahead of her competition. Rika Hongo of Japan took second in the event with a score of 123.49. Davin Choi of Korea finished third at 122.31.

The first part of the 25th Ondrej Nepela Trophy, which was hosted by Slovenia, took place Thursday. Medvedeva also won that part of the event with a score of 80, just shy of her record-setting score of 80.85 at the 2017 ISU World Team Trophy.

After Thursday’s short, Medvedeva led Hongo by 13.51 points after she scored a 66.49. Tallied together, Medvedeva finished first overall with a score of 226.72. Rika Hongo finished second overall at 189.98 and Elena Radionova ended up in third with a combined score of 182.81.

Medvedeva continues to add trophies to her resume. She won the World Championships in 2016 and 2017, and won the World Junior Championships in 2015. She’s the favorite to take the gold in figure skating at the Winter Olympics.
