Italian cyclist Claudia Cretti was terribly injured during a crash in stage 7 of the Giro Rosa on Thursday, and underwent surgery last night. The 21-year-old was taken to the hospital in Rummo for suffering severe head trauma which led to several contusions. Cretti is currently in a medically induced coma.
The Gazetta dello Sport reported that Cretti’s fall came during a descent called the ‘Zingara Morta’ where cyclists can get up to speeds of 90km/h. Cretti rides for Valcar-PBM and according to BBC Sport her team said: “We thank all those who have sent messages of affection from the entire cycling world. In particular, we thank the media for having treated this dramatic event with tact and delicacy.”
