Ukraine’s Olena Antonova upgraded to Olympic discus silver for 2008 Games

Ukranian discus thrower Olena Antonova has been upgraded to an Olympic silver medal for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, according to the Ukrainian Athletics Federation.

The upgrade comes after the original silver medalist, Cuba’s Yarelys Barrios, has been disqualified after a retest of her doping sample from 2008 found the banned substance acetazolamide.

The UAF says it received official notification from the International Olympic Committee that Antonova has been upgraded to a silver medal.

China’s Song Aimin, who is now in line to get the bronze, was not mentioned yet. When Olympians are disqualified, those who finished behind them aren’t automatically upgraded. Previous doping offenses by would-be medal recipients are one factor that the IOC considers.
